ABSTRACT
In 1963, growing anger at India’s often brutal, corrupt rule over Kashmir, and the theft of a sacred hair of the Prophet from the famous Hazratbal Mosque in Srinagar, ignited widespread protests and riots by Muslims. The protests raged on for two years, and were brutally suppressed, with heavy bloodshed, by Indian security forces.
