ABSTRACT
This chapter sets the context for the following debates on the wider background and specific process of the decision on the “Final Solution.” While Friedländer concedes that the debates over the history and historiography of the Nazi period and the Holocaust are far from over, he proposes a historiographical synthesis that would settle many of the old disputes, even if it might not resolve newer controversies.
