Western popular music traditionally consists of songs, with a strong emphasis on the importance of melody combined (almost invariably) with romantic lyrics. Even disco, with its strong melodies and romantic themes, failed to break radically with these formal conventions. By the same token, these musics emphasize their particular status as musics to dance to: in house and techno, the beat has become all important in a way never before seen in western music.
