The concept of memory clinics The pioneer in the field of memory clinics was Exton-Smith, who established the first memory clinic in London as a diagnostic outpatient service. Soon thereafter the first memory clinics on the Continent were founded (Stahelin et al, 1989; Monsch et al, 1998)- Basel opened in 1986; Munich opened in 1985, at the same time as a research institution.
