ABSTRACT

To the social, economic and medical problems that old age brings to society, one may also add a continuing increase in the proportion of old people in the general population.

In our country, around 12-14% of the general population are over 65, compared with Northwest Europe, where 14-16% is over 65. Care of the elderly requires a strong contribution from old age psychiatry, which becomes a basic discipline for all the socio-medical providers and a specialty for physicians and health workers who devote themselves to the care of the elderly (WHO, 1996).
