ABSTRACT

A fundamental hypothesis of science is that appearances are deceptive and that there is way of looking at or interpreting or organizing the evidence that will reveal superficially disconnected and diverse phenomena to be manifestations of a more fundamental and relatively simple structure. Milton Friedman’s master performance in practising economics by applying the logic of the structure of theories is his study of the consumption function, which is regarded as his ‘best purely scientific contribution’. For two decades, in early stage of his professional career, Friedman worked on consumption theory, exploring the possible explanations of relationship between consumption and income. The aim of analysis presented in Income from independent professional practice was to explain income differences among professions. Friedman is concerned with building a model as more concrete representation of theory.
