ABSTRACT
Admiral. He was active in major cam-paigns during the American Civil War, including FARRAGUT’S attack on New Orleans in 1862 and General GRANT’S successful assault on Vicksburg in 1863. He led the naval portion of a successful Army-Navy attack on Fort Fisher in 1865, the key to the strategic port of Wilmington, North Carolina.
