ABSTRACT
Admiral. As the Rear-Admiral command ing the German Mediterranean Squadron in 1914, he fired the first shots of the war at sea in WW1, and his actions, in taking his squadron to safety in Turkish waters, were instrumental in bringing Turkey into the war on the side of the Central Powers.
