ABSTRACT
Admiral. He was a fighting admiral, who had learned his trade from the bottom up. In 1639 he finally broke the power of Spain at sea in the battle of the Downs (the area immediately east of the British coast, between Dover and the North Foreland), and he led the Dutch fleet in the First Dutch War with England (1652-54), being killed in 1653 at the battle off Scheveningen.
