He entered the RAN in the first intake of the new naval college in 1913; 1919, Lieutenant; 1932, Commander; 1937, Captain; 1947, Rear-Admiral; 1950, Vice-Admiral.

He qualified with the RN in gunnery, and most of his appointments were in that specialization. After promotion to Commander, he was the Executive Officer of the new HMAS Sydney, 1935-37, and took command of her in 1939.
