ABSTRACT
Dame Katherine Furse, DBE. She was the first Director of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS), 1917-19. Although this organization was relatively small (only 7,000 personnel in 1918-19) and was disbanded after the war, the foundations she laid formed the basis for the much larger force which played a vital role in WW2 (see MATTHEWS).
