ABSTRACT

Vice-Admiral Sir Peter Phipps, KBE, DSC*. He was the first New Zealander to reach the rank of vice-admiral in the RNZN, and to be the CNS of the RNZN.

He joined the RNVR (New Zealand Division) as a bank clerk in 1928; 1930, SubLieutenant; 1934, Lieutenant; 1945, Commander; 1952, Captain; 1960, Rear-Admiral; 1966, Vice-Admiral (on retirement).
