ABSTRACT

The Restaurant Savoy, or Ravintola Savoy in Finnish, is located on the two uppermost floors of what used to be the headquarters of A. Ahlstrom Osakeyhtio, a wood-processing company whose business boomed in post-independence Finland. The Hotel Torni is known for its high-quality restaurants, an American-style bar and another on the top floor with panoramic views. The restaurant was designed to be functional and flexible, and to operate as an elegant hospitality space, and it fulfils the requirements. The interior has survived intact and has been preserved in near-original form for seventy-five years — a true testament to the power of the Alvar Aaltos’ design. The entrance to the building from the street opens onto a large hall. A lift — extremely modern for its time — conveys diners up to the seventh floor, where they exit into a fairly small reception and cloakroom area.
