ABSTRACT
The coal industry has a prominent place in the economic and social history of Britain. Its dominance of the energy sector during the last two hundred years of industrialization, its unmistakable imprint on the landscape, and the distinctive characteristics of mining communities and organizations have been the hallmarks of a great industry. But times change and in postwar years there has been a spectacular decline in the size of the industry.
