ABSTRACT
“No responsible educator has ever claimed that the Ph.D. carries with it any implication, let alone guarantee, that one who has earned it will be a good teacher. The only claim which can be seriously made for it, and it is not a negligible one, is that without it … one is not well-equipped to teach at the college and univer sity level, whatever other virtues and gifts he [sic] might possess.”
