ABSTRACT

The money supply figure Ml has been constructed as the aggregate of UK currency in the hands of the non-domestic bank public, plus net UK banks' current accounts or sight deposits. For 1870-1921 the data for M3 are half-yearly and are the aggregate of currency in the hands of the public, total banks' and other deposits at the Bank of England. The monthly data for 1921-1969 are currency in the hands of the non-domestic bank public, banks' total net deposits plus other deposits at the Bank of England. Money multipliers for Ml and M3 have been constructed with the former presented for 1921-1969 and the latter for 1870-1969. The currency/deposit ratio was calculated from the component series for UK currency in the hands of the non-domestic bank public and UK banks' net sight deposits. The other deposits ratio comprises other deposits divided by demand deposits.
