ABSTRACT

Teaching is a complex process, made interesting by the vast range of educational, social and political contexts and purposes that shape it. Increasingly, teachers are expected to take account of such diversity in their classroom practices. This chapter helps you to understand better the complex make-up of modern UK society, particularly how social diversity and educational opportunity and attainment are interrelated. As well as considering a big picture perspective you are also encouraged to examine critically the ways in which you respond to diversity in your teaching.
