EDUCATIONAL REFORM, MARKET CONCEPTS AND ETHICAL RE-TOOLING

One source of research findings deployed here is a series of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded studies of local, lived markets at work conducted by colleagues and I (Gewirtz et al., 1995; Ball, 1997; Ball et al., 1998, 1999, 2000; Reay et al., 2001; Vincent and Ball, 2001). Other research related to social polarisation in English school markets is also quoted in passing. Given the scope of the paper, the material used are merely illustrative snapshots or vignettes which offer a brief glimpse of complex and evolving social and economic processes.
