In a recent newspaper article addressing the increasingly dominant role of numbers and statistics in modern society, David Boyle (The Observer Review 14.01.01, p. 1) made a simple but telling point: ‘We take our collective pulse 24 hours a day with the use of statistics. We understand life that way, though somehow the more figures we use, the more the great truths seem to slip through our fingers. Despite all that numerical control, we feel as ignorant of the answers to the big questions as ever.
