INTRODUCTION

Having to re-read and re-consider what one has written over a period of three decades of research, commentary and analysis is both daunting and salutary. My first response to a long list of publications was that I had probably written too much, too quickly (and there are things I wish I had not written). The compulsion to write and the press to publish sometimes outstrip the availability of good ideas. But I was also made aware of how, through this writing, I had worked away at a set of consistent and coherent themes and concerns over a long period of time.
