ABSTRACT
Helen or Ellen Jewitt, a 23-year-old prostitute, was hacked to death in a fancy bordello in Manhattan on 10 April 1836. It is no surprise that this was a big story for the papers. Sensational murders had been the stuff of news since the days of the newsbooks but coverage of the Jewitt murder signalled a journalistic breakthrough that was to have ramifications beyond crime reporting.
