ABSTRACT

In a manufacturing factory, material and labour are input through a series of processes out of which a product is obtained. The quality of the output is monitored by inspection and testing at various stages of production. Any nonconforming product found is either repaired, reworked or scrapped. In construction, the scenario is similar except that if anything goes wrong, the nonconforming work is very difficult and costly (and sometimes even impossible) to rectify.
