ABSTRACT

Walden (the arts) The influential book written by HENRY DAVID THOREAU (published in 1854) which relates his observations of nature, non-materialism, independence and people’s relationship to nature and the need to be near nature. It promotes independence of thought and simple living. This book was written after Thoreau built a one-room cabin on the shore of ‘Walden’ Pond northwest of BOSTON in Massachusetts and lived there more or less for two years. This book encouraged the ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT and has influenced countless thinkers, poets, nature writers and other citizens. Today it is required reading in most American HIGH SCHOOLS.
