X (the arts) The former movie ranking of the RATINGS SYSTEM2 indicating that the movie contained explicit scenes of sex and violence and therefore was inappropriate for children. It was replaced in 1990 by NC-17. By association, “X-rated” describes something that is sexual (e.g., erotic, pornographic) and not appropriate for children.
