ABSTRACT

Not all ectopic pregnancies need intervention – either in the form of surgery or medical management. As we have already seen in Chapter 8, advances in high-quality ultrasound mean that many ectopic pregnancies can be detected at an early stage; however, many of these will be pregnancies that are destined to fail. In the past, many of these ectopic pregnancies would have gone undetected. However they create a management problem in that these women may be subjected to unnecessary surgery or medical therapy for a self-limiting condition.
