Some tasks require the right muscle force. Others require the right muscle stiffness. Still others, however, require the right muscle power. ‘Power’ has various meanings in everyday use, but in physics it has a specific meaning: it is the rate of doing work. Work, in physics, also has a specific meaning: the work W done by a force F is defined as:

where dx is the displacement (in the direction of the force) of the point at which the force is applied. Work is larger for larger forces, or for larger displacements in the direction of the force.
