ABSTRACT

The data presented in this chapter come from three sources: first, from surveys of LEAs carried out over four years with funding from DfE, Christ Church College and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers; second, from the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) school inspection reports; and third, from DES/DfE/DfEE reports. The earliest figures on exclusions available are acknowledged to be inaccurate by the DES; hence the discontinuous line above the markers on the graph in Figure 2.1. Indeed, that monitoring covered years from April to April rather than school years.
