ABSTRACT
The final construction and properties of the frame depend upon the indication for external fixation and the need for bone transport.
• Static axial compression is suitable for simple fractures. • Dynamic axial compression allows the application of controlled reciprocal micro-
movement or elastic deformation called ‘dynamization’. • Neutralization maintains alignment where the bone is multifragmented. • Distraction by ligamentotaxis reduces peri-articular fractures.
