ABSTRACT

The objectives of spinal management are to prevent further displacement and neurological injury. Pre-hospital transport involves in-line immobilization on a long spinal board and a hard cervical collar. The initial management of the patient with a spinal injury in the Accident and Emergency Department follows ATLS guidelines, to identify and treat life-threatening conditions. Assessment, management and transfers should maintain in-line spinal control with log rolls and five-person lifts. Patients should be cared for in dedicated wards by personnel experienced in spinal injuries and many units have a spinal injury protocol.
