ABSTRACT

Haemarthrosis of the knee is extremely common. Approximately 400 per 300000 population attend Accident and Emergency Departments annually with such a complaint.

Classification

1. Primary (spontaneous) haemarthrosis occurs without trauma. Disorders of coagulation, such as haemophilia or anticoagulant therapy, may result in spontaneous haemarthrosis. Unless controlled with prophylactic treatment, or early medical intervention, this can result in extensive damage to the joint and secondary osteoarthritic changes.
