ABSTRACT

Rupture of the Achilles tendon classically occurs in the middle-aged, often sedentary male, during sudden ankle dorsiflexion, excessive strain during the heel-off phase of gait, or following direct trauma. The mean age of presentation is 35 years and 60% of ruptures occur during recreational sport. Fifteen to twenty per cent occur during non-sporting everyday activities. Acute rupture may be seen in the amateur or professional athlete.
