ABSTRACT
As well as factors associated with radioactivity, different tissues have different sensitivities and the relative sensitivities are expressed as ‘tissue weighting factors’ (wt). The organs most at risk are the gonads (wt=0.25), red bone marrow, lung, colon and stomach (wt=0.12). Gonadal irradiation causes both impairment of fertility and mutagenesis with resultant effects on offspring.
