ABSTRACT

I first saw Liz Aggiss when she was invited to appear at the University of Surrey. The programme consisted of one piece only, called Grotesque Dancer (1986). After the first few minutes I was captivated by the performance. More, I was amazed and startled too, as I had not expected to encounter the very essence of the culture of the Weimar Republic on a small stage in Guildford. The students, on the other hand, reacted to her choreographies with surprising unease and felt very unsettled.
