ABSTRACT

The choreographic vocabulary of Liz Aggiss and Billy Cowie is informed by a mixture of multiple dance styles, with one of the most important being German expressionist dance. The vocabulary, however, also includes a wide range of influences from outside the dance world, in particular from the areas of film and visual art. In this essay I propose to concentrate on only one aspect of their choreographic question, i.e. the way Aggiss/Cowie use visual metaphor, especially in its relationship to abstract and non-abstract movement.
