ABSTRACT
Boserup’s is an attempt to trace the distinctive regional patterns of this transition. My objective is to elaborate some consequences of this transition to productive deprivation, consequences that are not confined to growth. First, Boserup’s account of the South Asian pattern is needed to situate my argument.
