Emerging stock markets and Third World development: the Post-Keynesian case for pessimism

The 1990s have been a time of dramatic growth in ‘emerging’ stock market activity in developing and former socialist countries. One index of this rapid growth is changes in market capitalization: emerging market capitalization grew from $146 billion in 1984 to $1.7 trillion in 1993 (IFC 1995).
