ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the myths and realities of parental-condoned absenteeism. In many studies, parental-condoned absenteeism is the largest single category of nonattendance. However, some recent studies have suggested that specific lesson truancy has now superseded it in scope and importance (O'Keefe et al., 1993). The chapter considers:

some of the implications for parental-condoned absence and recent developments to prevent it from happening;

where parents lay the blame for truancy;

the effects of truancy patrols;

types of parental-condoned absence.
