ABSTRACT

Today, Japanese is spoken by about 120 million, in Japan and by large Japanese communities in several parts of the world. The Ryu-Kyu language spoken in the Okinawa Prefecture is a dialect of Japanese. In Japan itself, several local dialects persist, some of which are unintelligible to outsiders, but all Japanese in Japan are taught hyoojun-go, the ‘standard language’.
