Sanskrit

Sanskrit belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-European. The name is an anglicization of samskrta ‘polished, purified’ (in contrast to prakrta ‘natural, unadorned’, and hence by extension, ‘vulgar, vernacular’).
