ABSTRACT

Two tones are distinguished: the single or falling tone, which affects m ono syllables (ignoring affixed endings, e.g. the definite article) and the double tone, the second com ponent of which has a slightly higher onset pitch than the first. B oth com ponents have a downward glide. This second tone affects most polysyllables. Tone may be phonemic; the example usually quoted is anden; pronounced with single tone, this means ‘the duck’; with double tone, ‘the spirit’.
