ABSTRACT

As a rule of thumb, museums should allocate at least 2 per cent of their annual operating budgets for training. Training should be designed to help people become more flexible, adaptable and versatile in their work. Training should be related to people’s needs either in their current posts or for their career development. Career guidance should thus be provided to all staff, as appropriate. Training provides increased job interest and commitment, as well as giving staff more incentives to achieve their personal objectives. Qualifications provide recognition and credit for skills and knowledge gained through training programmes.
