ABSTRACT

However, the definition of employee is complicated in law. The employer/ employee relationship may differ, for example when someone is working for the museum only on a part-time or temporary basis. Volunteers may also pose particular insurance problems because they are not normally viewed as employees. It is essential to understand these issues and where necessary seek specialist advice, as insurance cover needs to be tailored to meet the needs of the museum and to protect its staff. Other forms of insurance for staff and volunteers that the museum may wish to consider include health and medical insurance schemes, and pensions and life insurance schemes.
