ABSTRACT

The forward plan must derive from policies that have been agreed by the museum’s governing body. Museum managers therefore have to work with their governing bodies first to establish a policy framework within which they can develop their management planning and carry out the museum’s work. Policy development requires a great deal of time and consideration. It needs reference to existing professional codes of ethics, conduct and standards and comparison with other museums. Policy development should cover all aspects of the museum’s activities in the broadest sense and set out what the museum wants to achieve. The museum’s management plan then explains how the museum will achieve its policy goals.
