ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to extend the motivational analysis of physical activity by considering the notion of feelings of ‘control’. Specifically, we mainly review concepts of intrinsic motivation and autonomy, and in addition consider locus of control and attributions. We have the following objectives for the chapter:

nants of physical activity ● to develop an understanding of intrinsic motivational processes, specifically in terms of

Cognitive Evaluation Theory and perceptions of autonomy (Self-Determination Theory) ● to consider the role of rewards and reinforcement in affecting intrinsic motivation and

behaviour ● to understand the principles of the construct of locus of control, including the extent to

which it can be applied to physical activity ● to consider the basic principles of attribution theory and perceptions of control and their

application to health and physical activity ● to understand the role of beliefs concerning athletic ability in motivation.
