ABSTRACT

Holistic wellness nursing is a nursing philosophy that stresses the importance of maintaining health, the ‘whole person’ and self-responsibility for health and well-being (Chambers-Clark 1986). Nurses practising the approach often utilise complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatment modalities for the purpose of disease prevention and health promotion (Plawecki 1996; Wong et al. 2001; Fenton and Morris 2003). In this chapter I establish areas of commonality between holistic wellness nursing and the new public health, and explore the relevance of the socio-cultural critique of the new public health for holistic wellness nursing.
