ABSTRACT

The idea of a participatory economy described and defended in the last two chapters was first published more than a dozen years ago. If I had a nickel for every person who told me how much they liked the idea, but could not imagine any way to get there from where we are today, I would already be retired. Even those with unshakable faith in the human capacity to cooperate equitably invariably catch my eye and say, in one way or another: “Lovely idea, but you can't be serious!”
