ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various objectives or goals of reprocessing including: completing communications, releasing perceptions of personalization, increasing a sense of power, returning to safety, and releasing negative affect. It also discusses a variety of techniques to achieve these objectives. Techniques such as imaginal rescripting (similar to Smucker & Niederee, 1995; and Smucker et al., 1995) are used; however, they are expanded to include the use of fantasy, role playing between the client and therapist, “story board,” emotionally connected conversation, and guided imagery. Two examples of reprocessing sessions are included.
