of over 3 years. Strobel et al. (11) have described a Turkish family with three siblings with leptin deficiency attributable to a missense mutation in the leptin gene. These sisters did not undergo pubertal development with hormonal features of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Leptin reverses the obesity and induces puberty. However, these are very rare instances, and the majority of the obese appear to have elevated leptin levels compared to the lean, suggesting that there is some resistance to leptin at the brain level (12).
