Prostanoids and leukotrienes belong to a large family of metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA) collectively known as eicosanoids. AA is a 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid esterified in cell membrane phospholipids that is hydrolyzed upon cell activation by the phospholipases.
