ABSTRACT

The SOMIBRAS quarry was planned for opencast extraction of red granite blocks for application as dimension stone in civil construction engineering. In this mine plans the use of underground methods was not foreseen. The Secretariat of the Environment in Brazil demands that after the exhaustion the studies of the environment recovery of the involved area must be done and its use for other purposes are proposed. The quarry site is located at approximately 12 km of distance of the Capao Bonito city, in the Sao Paulo State, which had a population of about 80,000 inhabitants. One of the problems of these residents is the lack of leisure and sport areas, mainly in the weekends. The authors in this article present an example of diverse aspects of a global planning after closure of the quarry, using the area as leisure site, with fishing-ground, restaurant, park, tracks for walk and parking local for vehicles.
